Obviously, Trent gets it. Every opportunity he gets to experiment with a release, he does it a little bit better. This may not be the exact future of music/merchandise distribution, but I'm willing to put a bet on longnow that this page will be seen as the precursor to how it is done.
The future lets you listen, the future doesn't rape you, and most importantly, I don't see a place for a large monolithic RIAA. I see that someone will accomplish the real mission of the RIAA -- shut down mass production counterfeiters, but I think the current RIAA will have to be scrapped and rebuilt from scratch. (The same possibly extends to the IFPI)
I'm proud for Trent. He's got the cajones and the brains to figure it out. It gives me hope that the music industry isn't absolutely beyond salvation -- Hopefully the industry will listen.
And While I'm handing out music industry warm fuzzies, give a couple to Terry McBride & MC Lars. I still don't know about Radiohead.

Yet again giving the RIAA and much of the established music industry the metaphorical finger, Trent Reznor and crew upload multi-track garageband torrent files of three more songs to The Pirate Bay.
A.I.R.!!!
Music megaproducer Bob Ezrin slams the music industry in a biting letter, which uses Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails as an example of how an artist might skirt the system on one's own terms and with integrity intact.
Really and truly, this is how its supposed to be done. Trent uploaded and gave away the music--even a multi-track GarageBand version--and found a way to still sell millions of CDs and downloads. He even made the GarageBand version a part of the overall storyline, embedding clues and codes into the music itself.
Organizations like the RIAA/MPAA need be taking notes from artists like Trent Reznor and Tori Amos -- creativity of the artist is what sells a product, not lawsuits against its customers. You will always have to compete with "free", so find ways to use "free" to boost sales of your product. Be creative!
Anyone else come across this blog yet? I've seen a couple posts about it on the sony boards--with only one post to the blog so far, the jury's still out on whether this is "pip's" blog or not.
The single post was from today, so if the blog is authentic, then we can start trolling around using their names, "american doll posse", and possibly post dates starting this month. While that cuts the number of haystacks, there's still a lot of data mining to be done.
Anyone else having any success searching for Tori's other characters, with the big one being Myra Ellen playing Tori! (The counselor in me is absolutely fascinated).
So, the character (for those of you who haven't checked their email today) are Santa (platinum blonde with martini glass), Clyde (hippiechick(?) in broomstick skirt), Isabel (blonde, reminds me of a play off of Isabella Rosellini), Tori (Tori herself as a character, methinks), (featured in the teaser shot released earlier this year) and Pip (black hair, possibly Japanese influence mixed with Joan Jett).
Thoughts?
Well, we're still waiting to hear back from Countrywide and our lawyers to figure out the deal. I think we should go on the offensive ('cause I'm not going through this again!) if we don't hear back from them **soon**.
On the good side, I've been using the Sony E-Ink PRS-500. While its technically locked to the Sony Connect software/store (of course, windows only), I've found a nice OS X interface app Biblioskop and alternate ebook sources in (other than Gutenberg) Baen Books (DRM-Free) and a little DRM-ectomy on Microsoft Reader books from ebooks.com and fictionwise.com.
So, anyways, the big news is that this e-ink has just the right contrast (and adjustable size fonts) to let me read again!!!
Yeah, that's a big deal for me. So I have 4 years of books waiting for me. I'm starting with Gaiman's "Anansi Boys "and will probably go for Pratchett's "Thud!" or Laurell K Hamilton's "Seduced by Moonlight" afterwards.
BTW, Just got the joost beta on my iMac. I'm totally digging the Nettwerk channel. :)
And whether or not Enviga helps you lose weight, I think it tastes pretty good and doesn't have (many) calories. Too bad it's so expensive.
I'm getting the feeling that I'm slowly being pulled towards the music industry. I've been yapping with a few vocal artists....I'm learning a lot about recording equipment, interfaces, surfaces, and DAWs. Who knows where that might lead me? :) Weird when you find a community that you just naturally tend to navigate.
OK, I'll do my best to not sound like a giddy little teenager, but Jen and I got to meet and yap a little with BT (www.btmusic.com) tonight after his live performance of "This Binary Universe"--which is, slightly to the contrary, full of all kinds of analog instruments. (And answers the age old question of "How Many Macs does it take to run a concert"?)
More details tomorrow (it *is* 3am now), but he had high words of praise for Tori Amos and Kirsty Hawkshaw, and asked me to contact him on his private DeviantArt profile. He signed my copy of "This Binary Universe" while I was trying to stutter out my questions, much to my delight.
All in all, the concert was beyond impressive, he was a delight to meet and chat with, and it was well worth the energy expenditure that'll prolly put me in bed for a few days.
Yay! Vox now crossposts to LJ!
